Who was the best guitarist of the 50′s?

Polls by

Ok a new poll of the week now. Eric Clapton won last weeks poll which was “The Greatest British Guitarist.”

Now for this weeks poll. This week I am starting a series of posts on the Greatest Guitarists of each decade. Obviously this weeks decade is the 1950′s. However you will notice Robert Johnson in the list as I though it could be a list of pre-60′s aswell. All four of these guitarists appear in Rolling Stones 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time, in which 3 of them are in the top ten, and one of them appears third!

So here’s the poll:

Who Was the Best Guitarist Of The 1950's?

I reckon it could be Chuck Berry, Les Paul was probably the best for the guitar in general, but I would say Chuck was the best guitarist

    Robert Johnson ?
    He died in 1938.
I guess that would make him in-elligible to be included in that list.
Les Pauls guitar playingh still inspires countless people today. He gets my vote.

Hi Mick, if you read my intro paragraph I do mention about Robert Johnson, i thought I would include him in the list because there isn’t going to be a chance for him to be in any of my other lists. :-)

Kind of a strange question you’ve asked, especially with the line up you’ve given. Technically, the answer would have to be Robert Johnson, even though he died 16 years before Heartbreak Hotel. “Why” You ask? Because he influenced the other four names you’ve got on your list.

Now, personally… you left a very important name off the list: Scotty Moore. All he did was invent rock n’ roll and rockabilly. His licks are still played today.

Ok I’ll check into Scotty Moore he sounds cool. You’ll have to forgive some of my selections because I’m only 19. I should have really put an “other” section in the poll so people could vote for that
