Hello everyone and welcome to another Guitar Duel. I apologise for not doing one for a week but I’ve been busy. Anyway the last Guitar Duel between Paul Weller and Johnny Marr ended with Marr taking 88% of the votes, so thanks for all that voted. Now to this weeks fascinating battle between arguably Ireland’s two best guitarist exports. Between this weeks guitarists we look back at 70s blues and technical ability with the guitar. We look at some Bullfrog Blues and some apregio’d delay. So who are these two Irish guitar gods? Well its none other than the legendary Rory Gallagher and the amazing The Edge from U2.

So here we have two of the finest Irish guitarists ever, and in my opinion two of the finest the world has seen. Rory Gallagher’s success started with a band called Taste, however his best success was the solo work that he performed. Often cited as an underrated guitarist, Jimi Hendrix once said in an interview, when asked what it felt like to be the best guitarist in the world, Jimi replied, ”Go ask Rory Gallagher.” To me this shows how much Gallagher was overlloked by the mainstream, although not by his peers. The Edge on the other hand is considered one of the best from both mainstream audiences and guitarists alike. He is often complemented on his use of effects and low shimmering tone, with many bands today being influenced by his style such as Muse and Radiohead. Between these two guitarists they have clocked up over 180 million albums worldwide which is some doing. But what I want to know is, who’s the best? Before you decide, here’s a little bio about them both.
Rory Gallagher – Bio

The Edge – Bio

Early Work: N/A
Band That Made Him: U2
Other Projects: Passengers, Collaborations

Guitar Accolades: Placed at 24 in Rolling Stones 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 2005. Sold over 150 Million Albums Worldwide with U2.
So there it is then. You have seen what brilliant guitarists these two are, but now comes the hard bit. Deciding which of the two is the better guitarist. Who has the better technical ability? Who plays the guitar with more feeling? Who has inspired more people to pick up the guitar?

Ah yeah I seen this exact video the other day on a program called Guitar Heroes At The BBC, and I was very impressed then. Maybe I’ll put him in a future Guitar Duel.
Cool!

God to see Rory came out top in this duel, in my mind it was a no contest, one of the reasons that Rory is less well know by the mainstream is that he never put out a single, and a lot of mainstream audiences are introduced to artists through that route. But preferred to play and tour, entertaining live audiences was his strength, and at least he was appreciated by fellow guitarists many citing him as an influence and as Brian May said “Rory gave me my sound”!!
