Hello everyone and welcome to another vicious Guitar Duel! This week looks to be another tasty affair, but I don’t think its going to get as many votes as last weeks Guitar Election between Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton. I really didn’t expect last week to get so many votes, and what’s more, I didn’t expect the result that entailed. The result of last weeks Guitar Duel was an resounding win for Jeff Beck with 82 votes to Clapton’s 28. But now onto this weeks Guitar Duel. Two more recent guitarists than some of the previous duels, this week see’s us look back mainly to the 90′s, and to two unique guitarists. Both of these guitarists were political and anarchistic, which helped them develop some amazing guitar songs and riffs to boot. Their bands? Rage Against The Machine and Nirvana. If you haven’t guessed these legendary guitarists yet, they are of course Tom Morello and Kurt Cobain.

Between them they are considered some of the best guitarists ever and they both have a unique style. Cobain offers more in the way of songwriting ability but Morello’s technique, effects and ability make this an amazing contest. They both feature one song in Rolling Stones 100 greatest guitar songs; Killing In The Name and Smells Like Teen Spirit (Respectively). Both of these guitarists have also featured in LickThatRiffs very own Hero Worship series with Morello and Cobain being worthy enough for the accolade. What Cobain did with Grunge was outstanding, bringing it more mainstream with his instantly recognisable riff, Smells Like Teen Spirit. And the riffs hat Morello has produced time after time with Rage and with Audioslave are amazing by any guitarists’ standards.
But what I want to know is, who is the better guitarist? Who has influenced more people to pick up the six stringed instrument?

I know, Tom is better and bigger guitar player (or technician) definitely.
But, I love Kurt Cobain still.
I played a lots of songs of Nirvana when I go to highschool.
My English name ‘Kurt’ is based on ‘Kurt Cobain’, also.
He was my HERO all through my teenage.
I’ll be the first to say that it’s a shame to have lost Kurt Cobain so young, but, today, Morello is the better guitarist. Obviously he’s had longer to develop and grow! I’m a huge “Rage” fan and I never get tired of hearing how completely insane Morello’s guitar gets when he lets loose LIVE! But, I’ll also make the point that it’s anyone’s guess as to how far Cobain could have gone if he had just lived a little longer. He was a rising star who still had a ton of untapped potential…he just didn’t know it. SueB
Of course, I always miss Kurt Cobain still.
But Morello is kinda “REGEND” for guitar already, huh?
His playing and sounds are so freak, and unique.
