Guitar Motivation?

Alright people, how are you all? Hope you’re all ok.

Anywho back to the post. Recently I’ve been really trying to push myself back into the guitar. I remember when I was about 14 I couldn’t put the guitar down. I would play every night without fail, scream away with distortion blaring. Anytime I had a free couple of minutes or a couple of hours I would pick up my acoustic and strum out some Oasis, Paul Weller or another great song. I would regularly listen to guitar based music and think “Wow! I wanna learn that!” My favourite shop used to be the little guitar shop on a rough street, with the welcoming shop assistant. I would read Total Guitar every month and idolise all of the cover stars like Slash, Hetfield and Noodles.

I can’t remember exactly what time things changed but I remember putting it down to one thing. The change in my guitar teacher. My first teacher I had was great! It was definitely all about playing and enjoying the guitar and we learnt some amazing guitar songs, from ‘Tears In Heaven’ to ‘Duelling Banjo’s.’ Things weren’t always played to the book but it was definitely great fun. But then after about a year of teaching me he said that he couldn’t take me any further. I was gutted. Alas, he did give me the number to another guitar teacher that came highly recommended. Now I don’t want to slate this bloke all over the web cause’ he was a nice guy. It’s just everything was done to the exact note and with such precision. It was all very technical and we never really done much on the enjoyment of guitar. After about 6 months I would play guitar when he came round to teach and then wouldn’t play it until the next time he came.

So basically I haven’t practised properly since I was about 16! How shit is that? I had two main goals for writing this blog:

1) I started this blog because I wanted to start writing.
2) I started this blog because I wanted, no, needed guitar back in my life.

I’m concentrating more on the second goal with this post. I need to pick up the guitar again! To want to play it! To want to learn lots of songs. Not for anyone else, just myself. So I suppose what this post is asking is, How?

Have any of you been through this? Is it just me?
Have you lot got any suggestions on how to bring back my motivation? Even if I’m only playing for an extra hour a week, its a start.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks.

How’s that going for you? It’s amazing how much other people can influence our attitudes, isn’t it?! Well, do yourself a favor…don’t let anyone bleed any more of the fun out of your life. You had a bad fit with your last guitar mentor, but there is another someone out there that you will click with and get the star back into your inner rockstar. Talk to other guitarists, go to shows, surround yourself with people who feel the way you used to feel. You got incerdibly lucky your first time around by getting a teacher that you clicked with right away. It took me 18 years of classical piano lessons to realize that I didn’t hate the piano, I hated the classical piano. So I started playing the blues…and I fell in love with music all over again. Good thing blues translates so well to other instruments, eh?!Anyway, change something up and keep trying. Never give up, never surrender! :) Peace out!

Thanks alot Sue, I suppose I did get very lucky with my first teacher. I’m definitely going to try and play more, listen more, and go to gigs more. When I was writing my other post the other day about which Guitarists I had met, I remembered just how good gigs were. I’m also going to do a post in the near future on how my Guitar Motivation is getting on

I’ve been playing 3 months and i have no intention of putting my guitar down, ever. It goes where i go, through thick and thin, and with it, awesome music. I’m self-teaching and I feel like every day or couple of days, there is some minor improvement. I Think as a motivation, you should put up what you learn every week, in steps, how you managed, where you struggled, and then leave it to the rest of us to congratulate and elevate your esteem and enthusiasm. What do you think about this?
