Hello everybody and here's another weekly riff to get your teeth into. The last one I did was a looonnnnggggg time ago which I do apologise for and it was Boys Don't Cry which coincidentally was released in the same year as today's riff. This week sees me return to the United States for my riffing excellence and to the lovely Los Angeles. It is one of the catchiest riffs to ever be made and is instantly recognisable to a particular girls name. It comes from 70's LA band The Knack and is from their debut album Get The Knack. I was recently trawling through my old Total Guitar magazines and stumbled across the very first edition I bought from 2003. It instantly took me back to when I was first learning to play the guitar and in this particular issue it had this riff tabbed. The riff is often cited as one that is quite easy but be sure that lead guitarist Berton Averre is a very accomplished guitarist. This weeks riff (if you have't already guessed) is the amazing My Sharona.

Hello everyone and welcome back to another weekly riff and one of my favourite songs of the late 70s and my favourite song from this particular band. It also comes from a band who I am really into at the minute, maybe you could already tell with yesterdays Hero Worship post. The song was released in 1979 and was put on the compilation album Boys Don't Cry which was released in 1980. It feels weird that such an amazing song could not make it onto any studio album but maybe that adds to its charm and stature. I think the first time I heard this song was in the 1998 film, The Wedding Singer with Adam Sandler, and I fell in love with it back then, even though I knew nothing about The Cure at the time. In fact my love for The Cure is somewhat of a recent one but my love for that riff is one burnt deep in my guitar roots. The band are still going strong today and the guitarist still looks like a gothic drag queen. But oh, how he can play the guitar. This weeks riff is the amazing Boys Don't Cry.

Well hello there and welcome to another weekly riff! I know its been quite a few weeks but the World Cup was on, so you can't begrudge me that can ya? :-P This weeks riff comes from one of my favourite acoustic performances ever. The version that I have decided to do is from 1993 and an MTV Unplugged performance in New York, which was actually featured in my MTV Unplugged post a few months back. The original version of this song was released way back in the early 70's by the legendary David Bowie and then covered again in the MTV performance by Nirvana. The guitarist? The late great Kurt Cobain. This is often considered as one of the best tracks from Cobain's amazing unplugged performance, one in which he performed lots of covers instead of some much loved Nirvana songs. So what is this weeks classic riff? The terrific The Man Who Sold The World.

Hello everyone and welcome back to another weekly riff and back to a Guitarist that I have covered on here on several posts. I've already covered one of his riffs, Plug In Baby, back in April. He is considered one of the best guitarists of the last decade and a guitarist who promises a lot more. The guitarist? Matt Bellamy. He hails from the British trio called Muse and they have become one of the biggest bands in the UK, Europe and they're even making waves across the pond now. Personally I think their albums have slowly got worse as they've progressed with their 2001 album Origin Of Symmetry being their best. And I'm glad to say that is the album this weeks monster riff is taken from. A much heavier riff than Plug In Baby because of the drop D tuning, I think the song shows Bellamy's amazing songwriting skills, crafting a beautiful piano intro and mixing it with the massive riff that follows. So, what is this amazing riff? Well it's none other than New Born.

Hello and welcome to another weekly riff. I'm not really sure how many people are going to be reading this blog post because Twitter have decided to suspend my account. Hopefully this will be resolved over the next few days. Anyway lets have a look at this weeks cracking riff. It comes from a band that formed in 1967 and a band that I often think are underrated as a guitar band. Again this weeks choice has been influenced by watching the current BBC program, "Guitar Heroes at the BBC." The band are fronted by two guitarists that also sing; Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi. They often swap their lead parts and this has become very effective. So who's the band? And what's the riff? Well, the band is the hugely successful UK band, Status Quo. And the riff is the very psychedelic but catchy, Pictures Of Matchstick Men.
