Hello everyone and welcome back to another weekly riff and one of my favourite songs of the late 70s and my favourite song from this particular band. It also comes from a band who I am really into at the minute, maybe you could already tell with yesterdays Hero Worship post. The song was released in 1979 and was put on the compilation album Boys Don’t Cry which was released in 1980. It feels weird that such an amazing song could not make it onto any studio album but maybe that adds to its charm and stature. I think the first time I heard this song was in the 1998 film, The Wedding Singer with Adam Sandler, and I fell in love with it back then, even though I knew nothing about The Cure at the time. In fact my love for The Cure is somewhat of a recent one but my love for that riff is one burnt deep in my guitar roots. The band are still going strong today and the guitarist still looks like a gothic drag queen. But oh, how he can play the guitar. This weeks riff is the amazing Boys Don’t Cry.

The Cure are an English Alternative rock band who formed as a schoolmates back in 1976. It wasn’t until 1979 that they released their first album and single. Their debut album was called Three Imaginary Boys and their first single, Killing An Arab, although being recorded at the same time as the album didn’t actually make it on their debut. They then released Boys Don’t Cry and have had 12 studio albums since spanning four decades. They have sold over 27 million albums worldwide and by the start of the 90s they were one of the biggest Alternative music bands on the planet. The song only peaked at 22 upon its release in the UK but since then it has been covered by a multitude of bands from Reel Big Fish and Lostprophets to the likes of Razorlight. Now lets teach you how to play this timeless Cure riff.

And here’s how it should sound:
