Hello everybody and here’s another weekly riff to get your teeth into. The last one I did was a looonnnnggggg time ago which I do apologise for and it was Boys Don’t Cry which coincidentally was released in the same year as today’s riff. This week sees me return to the United States for my riffing excellence and to the lovely Los Angeles. It is one of the catchiest riffs to ever be made and is instantly recognisable to a particular girls name. It comes from 70′s LA band The Knack and is from their debut album Get The Knack. I was recently trawling through my old Total Guitar magazines and stumbled across the very first edition I bought from 2003. It instantly took me back to when I was first learning to play the guitar and in this particular issue it had this riff tabbed. The riff is often cited as one that is quite easy but be sure that lead guitarist Berton Averre is a very accomplished guitarist. This weeks riff (if you have’t already guessed) is the amazing My Sharona.
The Knack were a four-piece rock band that formed in 1977 in Los Angeles. In their early years they were known for their energy at live gigs and this prompted many record labels to sit up and take notice which resulted in a record label bidding war. They finally signed to Capitol Records to record their debut album, Get The Knack. It reached number 1 in the Billboard 200 for six weeks and sold over 6 million copies worldwide. They have had 6 studio albums since their debut but have never recaptured the stardom they first received. My Sharona is often said to be the biggest song from 1979 and it reached number 1 in the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks, selling 1 million copies in America. Always wanted to play it? Just never got round it it? Well here’s your chance:
