Weekly Riff! New Born!

Riffs by

Hello everyone and welcome back to another weekly riff and back to a Guitarist that I have covered on here on several posts. I’ve already covered one of his riffs, Plug In Baby, back in April. He is considered one of the best guitarists of the last decade and a guitarist who promises a lot more. The guitarist? Matt Bellamy. He hails from the British trio called Muse and they have become one of the biggest bands in the UK, Europe and they’re even making waves across the pond now. Personally I think their albums have slowly got worse as they’ve progressed with their 2001 albumĀ Origin Of Symmetry being their best. And I’m glad to say that is the album this weeks monster riff is taken from. A much heavier riff than Plug In Baby because of the drop D tuning, I think the song shows Bellamy’s amazing songwriting skills, crafting a beautiful piano intro and mixing it with the massive riff that follows. So, what is this amazing riff? Well it’s none other than New Born.

Muse formed in the early 90′s at their college in Devon, United Kingdom. It was only when they won a battle of the bands competition that they decided to take the band seriously. They have released 5 studio albums with the first being released in 1999 called Showbiz. Their second album, however, was the album that propelled them into music stardom and set their career in music alight. It is often considered their best album and in 2006 Q Magazine placed it at 74 in its 100 greatest albums list. It showcases many of the falsetto vocals, arpeggiated guitar chords and piano playing that would soon become the bands signature sound. The New Born riff is a riff that I think doesn’t get good enough credit. It is an amazing riff that uses a favoured drop D tuning, which works so well for the rest of the song.

Here’s how to play it, and remember to change the tuning:

And here’s how it should sound, I’ve gone for their live version from their Hullabaloo DVD, because it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when the guitar kicks in. Enjoy icon biggrin Weekly Riff! New Born! :

I hope you’ve enjoyed this weeks amazing riff. I know I have, it’s taken me back to one of my favourite bands when I started learning the guitar.

I generally prefer to play along to Muse songs on bass, although this is one of the few guitar riffs that I would consider learning. I watched part of their Glastonbury performance; such a great band :)
