Hello and welcome to another weekly riff. I’m not really sure how many people are going to be reading this blog post because Twitter have decided to suspend my account. Hopefully this will be resolved over the next few days. Anyway lets have a look at this weeks cracking riff. It comes from a band that formed in 1967 and a band that I often think are underrated as a guitar band. Again this weeks choice has been influenced by watching the current BBC program, “Guitar Heroes at the BBC.” The band are fronted by two guitarists that also sing; Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi. They often swap their lead parts and this has become very effective. So who’s the band? And what’s the riff? Well, the band is the hugely successful UK band, Status Quo. And the riff is the very psychedelic but catchy, Pictures Of Matchstick Men.

Status Quo formed as ‘The Status Quo’ in 1967 but later changed their name to Status Quo in 1970. This weeks riff was their first single since they became ‘The Status Quo’ and it was well received in both the UK and the US. It was released in 1968 and was a far reach to their 70s boogie rock sound that they later developed. It was a psychedelic classic 60s song with a simple four note riff at the start of the song. It ranked at 12 in the Billboard Hot 100, reached 7 in the UK singles chart and charted at number eight in Canada. So here’s how to play it:

And here’s how it should sound:
So there it is for another weekly riff. I hope this bought some of you back to your childhoods in the psychedelic 60s.
